Richard was born in St.John’s, NL.  He spent his formative years in the downtown area not far from where his gallery presently is.  There he had acquired the “downtown boy lifestyle” and as such many of the boys were labelled”corner boys”.  Hence the title of his business “CORNER BOY EDITIONS”.  Richard attended St.Patrick”s Hall School and Brother Rice High School where he graduated in 1967.  He possessed a deep interest in education, history, athletics and art.  Thus, he attended the University of Guelph, Ontario and Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador.. He received his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Masters of Education.  He went on to teach history, literature and art in Corner Brook, Avondale and finally his alma mater, Brother Rice High School.  He retired in 1999 and thus pursued a career as a professional artist.  His works were displayed by the Art Association Of Newfoundland and Labrador; painting on commission and selling work in various auctions.  He was also chosen to display work in an International Competition of Miniature Art in Toronto, Ontario.  In 1989 he appeared locally in a feature on CBC’s Here and Now; nationally on “Midday” with Valerie Pringle, and CBC’s “Newsworld”, he also appeared on NTV’s “Places To Go”.  His work is owned by many locally, nationally and internationally.
